Acoustics – Wavelength and Velocity of Sound
Educational Materials Physics Educational Materials Waves and Oscillations Learning Activities
Students use this experiment to determine the velocity of sound as a function of temperature.

  • Holder for Tubes and Coils Included
  • Multi-Purpose Microphone Included
  • Experiment Measures the Velocity of Sound
The experiment measures the velocity of sound in the air as a function of the temperature, θ, and compares it with the linear function resulting from the temperature-dependency of pressure and density.

The value c(0) is determined using a best-fit straight line, and the literature values p(0) and ρ(0) are used to determine the adiabatic coefficient, κ, of air.

Ordering information: This kit includes an apparatus for sound velocity; holder for tubes and coils; tweezer; multi-purpose microphone; sensor-CASSY 2; CASSY lab 2; timer box; nicr-ni adapter S, type K; temperature probe, nicr-ni, 1.5 mm, type K; transformer 2 to 12V, 120W; two saddle bases; scaled metal rail, l = 50 cm; connecting lead 19 A, 25 cm, red/blue, pair; and connecting lead 19 A, 100 cm, red/blue, pair. A PC with Windows XP/Vista/7/8 (x86 or x64) is required.
