The osmometer used to demonstrate the principle of osmosis. This process plays a key role in regulating the volume and water of cells. The two chambers contain different concentrations of a solution and are separated by a semi-permeable membrane. The solvent flows osmotically into the solution of higher concentration. This raises the liquid level of that solution in the open system.

The higher the concentration of the solution, the greater the water ingress. It slows to a stop when the hydrostatic pressure of the water column in the capillary tube is exactly equal to the osmotic pressure.
