Charcoal is the reducing agent to reduce tenorite (CuO) to elementary copper. When heated, the mixture of tenorite and pulverized charcoal produces red copper and carbon dioxide. A saturated calcium hydroxide solution is used to verify the presence of the carbon dioxide.
