Ward's® Case of the Red Eyed Female Lab Activity
Specimens Live Specimens Animals - Living Material
Investigate sex-linked traits and patterns of inheritance in Nasonia vitripennis, a parasitic wasp that does not sting or bite.

  • Introduce your students to Nasonia, an excellent organism for studying genetics
  • Results can be obtained in less than 2 weeks with just one cross
  • Nasonia has many different genetic varieties available
In a series of predictive exercises, including crossing Nasonia with different eye colors, students will decide what to look for in the F1 generation in order to determine whether a gene is dominant, recessive, or sex-linked.

When the F1 generation emerges, students will be able to note that there are red-eyed males and dark-eyed females, suggesting that eye color is indeed a sex-linked trait.

Ordering information: Activity contents include: 1 vial of Sarcophaga pupae (the host organism for Nasonia), 1 vial of Wild-type male Nasonia pupae, 1 vial of Scarlet-eyed female Nasonia pupae, a teacher's guide, and a student copymaster.
