Studying the life cycle of Drosophila and performing genetic crosses just got easier with this lab activity that includes a safe way to anesthetize the fruit flies.
- Materials for a class of 32 students working in eight lab groups or eight students working in two lab groups
- Parental stock of three Drosophila crosses included
- Parental generation already crossed for convenience
Students use Ward's unique Thermo-Anesthetizer, a reusable block that immobilizes fruit flies for up to 30 minutes without chemicals, allowing for close examination. In the process, students learn how to anesthetize, sex, and count flies, study their life cycle stages, and analyze the results from monohybrid, dihybrid, and sex-linked crosses.
The kit includes the parental stock of three Drosophila crosses and a wild-type culture plus materials for extracting and staining salivary gland chromosomes. Drosophila crosses will require approximately two weeks to produce offspring that can be analyzed.
