This laboratory focuses on the mutualistic relationship between the giant tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus) and the Galápagos tomato (Lycopersecon esculentum) as an example of coevolution.
A letter written by Darwin himself arrives in your classroom. In it, Darwin requests that your students design an experiment with the materials provided to test the possibility of coevolution between the Galápagos tortoise and tomato. Students simulate some of the interactions that exist between plants and animals to discover the specific connections in that ecosystem. Developed by Rich Benz, this kit includes materials for seven student groups, a teacher’s guide, and reproducible student lab aligned with National Science Standards. Grades 9–10. Note: Tomatoes, required, are not included.
