Understand How a Water Treatment Plant Works.

  • Perfect for environmental and green chemistry units
  • Aligned to NGSS Practices
  • Performance expectations: MS-PS1-2, HS-PS1-3
  • Disciplinary core ideas: PS1.A, PS1.B
  • Cross cutting concepts: Patterns
  • Engineering Practices: Analyzing and interpreting data, plannign and carrying out investigations
Students will develop a knowledge of the processes performed at a water treatment plant and understand the reasons for each process. They will perform, on a small-scale, several of the procedures that occur in a water treatment plant on 'polluted' water. They will examine the changes in the water after each treatment step is performed. They will also observe physical characteristics of water, such as clarity, color, odor, and how they are affected from the beginning of the treatment process until the end. Kit contains enough materials for 15 groups of students.

Ordering information: Kit includes fine sand, coarse sand, fine gravel, activated charcoal, potassium aluminum sulfate, calcium oxide, kaolin (clay) powder, green food coloring, white vinegar, plastic cups, stirring sticks, and teacher's guide and student copymaster.

Delivery information: Instructor's Manual and SDS included.
